Newsletter September 2006 Supporters of the CAPA Community Education Fund once again enjoyed themselves at the annual Gala which took place at the Walnut Creek Marriott Ballroom on June 3, 2006. This year, a crowd of over 300 were entertained by the live jazz ensemble of George Hsieh and the music of DJ Derek Chu, as this year’s class of interns broke a new rcord in raffle ticket sales supporting their program. Our new class of interns introduced the evenings guests with highlights of their early careers with a short movie parody: filmmaker Frank Lin, journalist Monica Xu and public official reepresentative Russel Lowe in the theme of “Unsung Heroes of the Asian American Community.” Mr. Lin recently directed and produced “American Fusion”, a romantic comedic movie that was in recent circulation. He showed a trailer and film clips from his latest releases and the crowd wanted more. He spoke about his artistic growth and introduced CAPA and CAPA Ed Fund‘s crowd to his family’s support during his struggles to achieve success. Monica Xu, from San Francisco’s World Journal, is now a respected senior reporter who has covered CAPA events over the years. Her work with us has allowed her to understand the depth of what we do. She has also received state awards for her photographic works. Russell Lowe has been the director for Senator Diane Feinstein’s San Francisco office for several years. However, his political expertise and experience spans two decades with other members of the electorate such as Senator Alan Cranston. His yearly treks to Asia keep Senator Feinstein current with socioeconomic and geopolitical perspectives that are developing increasing significance across the Pacific. The eleven students have interned this past summer in offices of elected politicians. Proceeds from this Gala’s raffle and silent auction wnt toward their stipends. We hope that this encourges youths to be active particiapants in the political world in the future. |
