Newsletter February 2005 Marsha Cheung Golangco, a lifetime CAPA member, and a two- term board member, was selected to receive the Martin Luther King Jr., Honorable Mention Humanitarian of the Year Award. This award was presented to her by the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors during the 27th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration on 1/18/05. Marsha was selected for her long time community services, her example of equality, peace, justice, non-violence, leadership and inspiration. During her 8 years service as a Contra Costa County Human Relations Commissioner, Marsha worked on many issues including domestic violence against women and children; violence related to drugs; human and women rights; immigrant discrimination and inequality. Under her leadership and in partnership with other like-minded people and organizations, she helped organize community events to promote awareness and practice of peace: events such as Stop the Violence Community Forum in San Ramon; Strength in Unity Planning Committee with Senator Tom Torlakson; and A Season for Non-Violence Peace Walk in Danville. After September 11, 2001, Marsha was invited by California State Senator, Tom Torlakson, to co-author the "Principles of Alliances: Partnership in Non-Violence and Peace." This document has since been posted on the senator's web site. To Marsha, living Dr. Martin Luther King's Dream provides her with strength, purpose, and commitment. She believes in facing adversity and responsibility with courage and power. Marsha, like Dr. King, is pursuing global peace and harmony by being an example to her community: a leader and an educator.
