Newsletter February 2005 It is no secret that education is hurting for funds. The state is not coming through with financial assistance, so two measures are coming to Contra Costa voters to shore up the deficit with parcel taxes. Measure A proposes to increase the Acalanes Unified High School District tax to $189 per parcel per year, an increase of less than $9 per month. Despite its high scholastic performance, it is second to the last in funding among California high schools. Measure B’s parcel tax to the Walnut Creek School District increases the tax to $82 per parcel per year, an increase of less than $4 per month, and will go to elementary and middle schools. Both have a senior exemption for those over 65. If you are currently exempt, you need not re-apply. Parents in these school districts have donated over $2 million annually to support their children and countless hours of volunteer work already. We think they need a helping hand. CAPA is encouraging a yes vote on both of these measures. |
